Film description

Rose of Nevada is a mystical sci-fi mystery set in a remote Cornish fishing village, where a trawler that vanished thirty years earlier suddenly reappears in the harbour. Two men — portrayed by two of contemporary British cinema’s most compelling young actors, George MacKay and Callum Turner — join the vessel’s new crew in hopes of better fortune. But after their first voyage, something profoundly unsettling occurs: time no longer seems to behave as it should.

Rather than functioning as a conventional time-travel narrative, the film unfolds as a melancholic “time-loop ballad” about community, memory and sacrifice. Past and present bleed into one another as the characters confront a moral dilemma: is individual survival more important than the future of the community? Jenkin transforms the Cornish landscape into a mythic space — the sea, the mist and the harbour becoming a kind of collective consciousness that preserves the village’s history.

With its hypnotic visual texture and handcrafted analogue sound design, the film continuously destabilises reality. The rhythms of daily labour, fishing routines and small-town life gradually dissolve into a timeless, balladic realm where the past has not disappeared — it has simply been waiting.

About the Director

Mark Jenkin

Mark Jenkin is a British writer-director, cinematographer and editor whose work has established him as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary independent UK cinema. His earlier films, including Bait and Enys Men, were created using analogue techniques and are celebrated for their tactile visual language and deeply atmospheric, place-driven storytelling.

With Rose of Nevada, Jenkin continues to refine this handcrafted aesthetic, embedding it within a larger-scale narrative that blends maritime folklore, science fiction and social allegory. Remaining faithful to his analogue process — often shooting, editing and composing the music himself — Jenkin crafts a film that feels both mythic and intimate, rooted in Cornwall yet resonant far beyond it.
